Recover Deleted Communication

In case you are unaware, WhatsApp comes self-equipped with a backup feature which allows easy and swift recovery of the media files and other messages. In order to restore data via a backup file, all you need to-do is to uninstall WhatsApp and then install it once again. Upon reinstallation, you need to enter the same credentials as before and after the authentication process you will soon be prompted to ask whether you want to restore database from your backups. Once you accept it, most of your previous messages will be restored.

First Step To Recovery: Prevent Data From Being Overwritten

If you stumble upon accidental deletion, then, the first thing you need to-do is to disable applications and internet services on your android phone in order to prevent overwriting of the existing data blocks in your phone’s memory. This is because, the influx of new data can easily overwrite the space occupied by your previous data thereby rendering the process of recovering data impossible. Methods For Recovering Deleted Media There are two recovery methods available:

Manual Restoring Method

This method works by connecting your phone to a computer and then locating the database file from your phone’s memory. The database files are located in a subfolder titled Database present in the WhatsApp folder. The database file would be labeled something like ‘msgstore-YYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt’. Now, make a copy of this file in your computer and uninstall WhatsApp. Once done, reinstall the application and copy the database file back to your phone and WhatsApp will restore all the available data.

Recovering Using Third-Party Applications

There are various applications available, both premium and free, that try to recover deleted data. Some of them are listed below:

Undeleter

The app recovers all segments of information that have not yet been overwritten including documents and images. All the recovered data can then automatically be saved to your internal memory or even cloud storage services such as Google Drive and Dropbox.

Recuva

In case your phone is not rooted, you can use Recuva which is available in both premium and free versions. In order to start the recovery process, connect your phone to the computer and select the files that you intend to recover. In WhatsApp’s case, select Sdcard -> WhatsApp -> Media. Once selected, the application will recover all possible information in negligible time.
